Easy Steps to Calculate your BMI at Home

BMI or Body Mass Index is a great way in which you can quickly tell whether you are at a higher risk of some ailments due to being overweight, obese, or underweight. It is a simple and easy method that anyone can use in the comfort of their homes without having to go to a doctor.

The BMI Formula

Calculating BMIis not tough at all. It is extremely easy, and all you need is a calculator and knowing what’s your height and weight. The BMI formula is essentially your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared (kgs/m2). In the process of this calculation, you can face a couple of issues.

For one, you may not know your height or weight. Secondly, even though you may have these figures, they may not be in the right unit of measurement that is required to calculate BMI. Here is what you can do.

Measuring your Height

  • Stand with your back to a plain wall.
  • Make sure your heels are pressed to the back of the wall and that both feet are close together. There should be no gap between your feet.
  • Take a flat ruler and place it on your head and make a slight notch in the wall with the edge.
  • Stand back and use a tape measure your height.
  • If you are checking your height with the help of a measuring tape, you may want to note the same in terms of meters so that you do not have to convert the figure later.

Measuring your Weight

This is an easy one in which you need to just get on to the scale and check your weight. Note that you may want to ask someone to check the weight since it is essential that you are looking up when the measurement is noted.

In addition to that, ensure that you are not carrying anything heavy in your pockets or wearing heavy shoes/clothes that could impact the reading significantly. Try and measure your weight in kilograms so that you do not have to convert the numbers later.

Converting your Height to Meters

In most cases, people tend to be aware of their height in feet and inches. The calculation is simple. Multiply your height in feet by 0.3048 and the inches by 0.0254 and add the two numbers to get your height in meters. For example, if your height is 5 feet and 5.5 inches, then the calculation that you should do is:

5 feet = 5 x 0.3048 meters = 1.524 meters

5.5 inches = 5.5 x 0.0254 meters = 0.1397 meters

By adding the two, you get 1.6637 meters as your height

Converting your Weight to Kilograms

The most common metric used for weight is pounds. Pounds can be converted into kilograms by multiplying your weight by 0.45359237. Therefore, if you weigh 135 pounds, then your weight in kilograms would be 135 x 0.45359237 = 61.23497 kilograms.

Calculating BMI

Carrying the above example forward, the BMI of an individual with a height of 5 feet 5.5 inches and 135 pounds would be:

61.23497 / (1.6637 x 1.6637) = 22.123
